Update Regarding Winter Storm

January 23, 2026

A Winter Storm Warning will go into effect at 6PM tonight CST followed by a Extreme Cold Warning that will go into effect on January 24 at 6PM CST.

There have been minimal changes to the forecast, with only minor refinements to timing and accumulation estimates. According to the National Weather Service, Denton and Collin County should expect a prolonged winter weather event beginning this evening and continuing into early next week.

An Arctic cold front will move through today, with rain and drizzle continuing through much of the day as temperatures fall into the 30s and 40s. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing this evening through Saturday morning, allowing rain to transition to freezing rain and sleet. Freezing rain will initially impact bridges and overpasses, followed by all road surfaces, resulting in rapidly deteriorating travel conditions.

Accumulations:

Current projections indicate that Northern counties could see ice accumulations ranging from ¼ to ½ inch, with additional sleet accumulations of several inches possible, particularly across northern portions of the county. A partial transition to snow is possible late Saturday into Sunday morning, which would occur on top of existing sleet and ice accumulations. Precipitation is expected to taper off from west to east on Sunday.

Cold Temperatures:

Exceptionally cold temperatures will remain in place from Saturday evening through at least Monday, with some areas not climbing above freezing until Tuesday. Overnight low temperatures are expected to reach the single digits, with wind chill values ranging from -10 to 0 degrees, posing life-threatening conditions for people, pets, and livestock. These conditions will also increase the risk of frozen pipes, infrastructure damage, and potential power outages.
